BUFFALO'S HISTORIC CANAL SYSTEM. To aleviate congestion of Erie Canal, the city constructed a system of canals or slips, in what is now the First Ward area and the harbor, connecting the Erie Canal with Buffalo Creek (now Buffalo River) and Lake Erie.
